Man United Shirt | Managers Provide Drama as English Fans Lament Talent Drain

The most popular soccer league in the world began its season on Saturday, and along with the excitement and exhilaration about the games themselves — not to mention the sheer wonderment over the eye-crossing suit that the golfer Rory McIlroy chose to wear while parading his British Open trophy around Old Trafford in Manchester — there was a fair bit of hand-wringing from many longtime observers of England’s Premier League.

The concerns were twofold. First, with another transfer period nearing its conclusion, the shifting of the game’s truly elite stars away from England appears to have continued. Now that Luis Suárez will be attacking defenses in Spain — but not feasting on them, presumably — it is not a stretch to posit that none of the top 10 players in the world are currently playing in England.

That is compounded by the fact that there are also not a lot of English players playing in England’s top level (or at least playing very much). With foreign players omnipresent at many clubs (Manchester City had a starting lineup of all foreigners in the Community Shield last week), another round of concern over the paucity of English players getting regular minutes has cropped up. Last season, only about 30 percent of starters in the Premier League were eligible to play for England’s national team. Snarky fans, who surely watched England stumble in this summer’s World Cup, are often quick to point out that these two concerns — that is, a lack of the best players and a lack of English players — are not connected.

Nonetheless, there can be no disputing that one thing the Premier League does have plenty of is drama surrounding its managers. Part of this is cultural: Unlike athletes in American sports, players in England (and most other countries in Europe) do not face much accountability to the news media and fans during the season. There are no hard questions for players to answer after games, and there are few public explanations given when a player has made a costly mistake. The managers, in many ways, are the only ones with a voice. And most do not hesitate to speak.

Consider what has happened in just the first week.

José Mourinho, Chelsea’s manager, who brands himself the Special One, began the season by pointing out that other coaches in the Premier League did not face the same pressure to succeed that he did. In Mourinho’s opinion, other coaches “have 10 years to win something; I have only two.” That seemed to be a not-so-veiled shot at Arsenal Manager Arsène Wenger, who last won the Premier League title in 2004, and whom Mourinho previously described as a “specialist in failure.”

Wenger, for his part, was displeased that his team was playing at all. With the World Cup final having been played on July 13, Wenger said, the Premier League’s opening day was at least a week too early. Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski, who all played for the World Cup champion, Germany, did not play for Arsenal on Saturday as the Gunners beat Crystal Palace, 2-1.

“Let’s not forget that the guy who goes to the World Cup final plays seven games,” Wenger said. “They need a breather.”

Up in northern England, Louis van Gaal wasted no time getting involved in the Premier League managers’ showcase. Van Gaal, who left his job as manager of the Netherlands’ national team to take over at Manchester United, seems well aware that Alex Ferguson left a strong history of colorful leadership — one that the dullish David Moyes could not fill — and van Gaal has not hesitated to embrace it.

Liverpool Shirts | Liverpool's first game since Suarez left

Liverpool V Southampton

Daniel Sturridge earned Liverpool three points with a late goal as they recorded a hard-fought 2-1 win over Southampton in the Barclays Premier League at Anfield.
Liverpool were far from their flowing best and laboured going forward. But Sturridge, who has become Liverpool's main man in attack after the exit of Luis Suarez, saved the day with a predatory finish from four yards with just 11 minutes to play.
The hosts controlled the first half, but chances were few against a Southampton side playing under manager Ronald Koeman for the first time.
Search More Liverpool Shirts on our shop.

One of those opportunities led to the opening cool, as an exquisite Jordan Henderson through-ball set up Raheem Sterling, who produced a cool finish midway through the first half. Nathaniel Clyne's powerful effort levelled proceedings in the 56th minute and Liverpool, who finished second last term, could have gone behind but Steven Davis missed a golden opportunity. The midfielder was made to pay as Sturridge reacted quickest to Sterling's header to prod home.
There were still nervy moments for the home crowd, who saw Morgan Schneiderlin's fierce effort tipped on to the bar by Simon Mignolet, before substitute Shane Long headed the rebound wide, but Liverpool held on for victory.
Former Southampton defender Dejan Lovren was one of two new Liverpool signings included from the beginning, alongside Javier Manquillo, while Schneiderlin started alongside four fresh faces for the visitors, who won the corresponding fixture last season.
Although the £75m sale of Suarez to Barcelona stripped the Reds of one of the game's most prolific strikers, Sterling and Sturridge struck either side of a Nathaniel Clyne equaliser to compensate on this occasion.
But Liverpool were left hanging on for the win and will have to improve significantly if they are to repeat or improve on their second-place finish last season.

 Cheap Football Shirts

Following on from Dante and Jerome Boateng's attempts to look good in front of the cameras last week, Cristiano Ronaldo also ensured he was the man to look out for in Cardiff on Tuesday night.
As well as a superb solo performance on the night, scoring twice as Madrid eased to a 2-0 win in the UEFA Super Cup final over Sevilla, the 29-year-old made sure he stood out prior to the game too.
The Portuguese star was seen tiptoeing in the back row of the team photo ahead of the clash in Cardiff, and backed up his big man stance with a scintillating display for the Galaticos.

Just days earlier Dante and Jerome Boateng made similar stances as they pulled their shirts tight at the back, seemingly in a move to look good for the cameras.
Elsewhere, Ronaldo will look to continue his stunning form for the European Champions this season after scoring 50 goals in all competitions for the club last season as they won the Champions League for a historic 10th time in their history.
The former Manchester United forward will no doubt play a pivotal role again for Carlo Ancelotti's side as they look to get back on track domestically after finishing 3rd in La Liga last time out.

Danny Welbeck targeted by Hull as Man United shirt striker faces bit-part role under new boss Louis van Gaal

Hull are ready to make an audacious move for Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck.
The Tigers have asked about the availability of the 23-year-old, who starting for England against Italy and Uruguay at the World Cup.

Although Hull may have enough money to tempt Manchester United, Welbeck would need some convincing that it is the right move for him.
However, his role in Louis van Gaal's plans is still undetermined.

Steve Bruce will have to pay around £14million for Welbeck, who has been told his chances of first-team action will be limited under new boss Van Gaal.
The Hull boss needs a replacement for Shane Long, who is set to join Southampton in a shock £12m move just months after joining from West Brom for £7m.
And Bruce hopes Van Gaal will decide to cash in on Welbeck as he re-shapes the Old Trafford squad.

Club Legend Didier Drogba Back In A Chelsea Shirt For The First Time

It was a special moment for Didier Drogba during the pre-season friendly with Werder Bremen as the striker took to the field in a Chelsea shirt for the first time since being re-signed.
The 36-year-old has returned to Stamford Bridge this summer after two years away and has been given a hero’s welcome after what the Ivory Coast international achieved first time round at the club.
Didier Drogba has announced that he is retiring from international football and will no longer don the Ivory Coast jersey. This will mean that he gets to spend more time with his club team, Chelsea. The Chelsea skipper has approved of a one year deal for Didier Drogba with hopes that Drogba will continue his menacing forward form with Chelsea the way he did during his 8 year time with Chelsea before he left the club.
Chelsea gets a ray of good news after stalwarts like Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole decided to hang their boots for good. The new player list to Chelsea includes Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Filipe Luis who have been acquired to the club for £75 million.
Didier Drogba has been brought in to Chelsea along with French defender Zouma and Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois have returned to the club after the stint on loan away from Chelsea. It is the start of good news for Chelsea supporters to see that Drogba makes his comeback in the club and hopefully brings back his speed of the game when he takes the field with a Chelsea shirt on.

First picture of Luis Suarez in a Barcelona shirt after Liverpool announce deal

SPOTTED: First picture of Luis Suarez Shirt in a Barcelona shirt after Liverpool announce deal
Liverpool confirmed that Suarez would be leaving for Spain in a statement on their website.

It read: "Liverpool FC confirms that Luis Suarez will be leaving the club after a transfer agreement was reached with FC Barcelona. The player now has permission to complete the usual formalities, which will then conclude the transfer.

"We would like to thank Luis for his contribution and the role he played in helping bring Champions League football back to Anfield.

"Everyone at Liverpool Football Club wishes Luis and his family well for the future."
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers added: "Luis is a very special talent and I thank him for the role he has played in the team in the past two years, during my time at Liverpool.

"I think he would be the first to accept he has improved as a player over that period, along with the team and has benefited from being here, as we have benefited from him.

"The club have done all they can over a sustained period of time to try to keep Luis at Liverpool. It is with great reluctance and following lengthy discussions we have eventually agreed to his wishes to move to Spain for new experiences and challenges. We wish him and his young family well; we will always consider them to be friends.

Sergio Busquets given No 5 shirt at Barcelona after being asked by Carles Puyol

Sergio Busquets given No 5 shirt at Barcelona after being asked by Carles Puyol

  • Sergio Busquets to wear No 5 shirt at Barcelona next season
  • Retired former captain Carles Puyol had worn No 5 since 2002
  • Puyol suggested that the number be given to Busquets

  • Barcelona have announced that Sergio Busquets will inherit their No 5 jersey from retired former club captain Carles Puyol.
It was 36-year-old Puyol, now assistant sporting director at Barca following his retirement earlier this summer, who suggested to the club that Busquets be handed the now legendary shirt number.

World Cup-winner Busquets, 26, has been an integral part of Barca's first-team since being handed his debut by Pep Guardiola in 2008.
The holding midfielder has worn the No 16 jersey for the past five seasons but will don No 5 for the first time in Saturday's friendly at Nice.
Busquets said: 'It is an honour to wear No 5, and also an honour that Carles Puyol thought that I should inherit it.'
Puyol had worn No 5 at the Nou Camp since 2002, making 481 of his 593 Barcelona appearances with it on as he won six La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues.
He inherited it from fellow former Spain centre back Abelardo Fernandez.
