James Rodriguez's Real Madrid shirt sales figure was an exaggeration say adidas

James Rodriguez's Real Madrid shirt sales have been exaggerated according to kit manufacturer adidas.

The Colombia forward moved to the Bernabeu last month for a £63million transfer fee last month, making him the fourth most expensive player in football history.

Consultancy firm Euromericas Sport Marketing said 345,000 Rodriguez shirts were shifted in the 48 hours after signing his Madrid contract on 22 July. 

Madrid's adidas office is quoted as saying: 'We have seen publications about selling T-shirts, and they are in fact not true.

'The figures are nowhere near the reality.'  

Rodriguez, 23, was the top scorer at the World Cup in Brazil as Colombia exited at the quarter-final stage. 

He left Monaco after a single season in Ligue 1, having cost the French side £35m. 

The playmaker scored 10 goals in 38 games as his side finished second in the league table. 

Only Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez have cost more money in football history.

A huge ceremony at the Bernabeu say Rodriguez presented to 40,000 fans and early estimates suggested shirt sales would break the record set by new team-mate Ronaldo. 

But adidas say the consultancy firm's figures are based on the 900 shirts flogged in the official Madrid club shop on the day of his presentation and do not know if 'sales extrapolated globally' although the sponsors' have not released official stats.
