James Rodriguez's Real Madrid shirt sales figure was an exaggeration say adidas

James Rodriguez's Real Madrid shirt sales have been exaggerated according to kit manufacturer adidas.

The Colombia forward moved to the Bernabeu last month for a £63million transfer fee last month, making him the fourth most expensive player in football history.

Consultancy firm Euromericas Sport Marketing said 345,000 Rodriguez shirts were shifted in the 48 hours after signing his Madrid contract on 22 July. 

Madrid's adidas office is quoted as saying: 'We have seen publications about selling T-shirts, and they are in fact not true.

'The figures are nowhere near the reality.'  

Rodriguez, 23, was the top scorer at the World Cup in Brazil as Colombia exited at the quarter-final stage. 

He left Monaco after a single season in Ligue 1, having cost the French side £35m. 

The playmaker scored 10 goals in 38 games as his side finished second in the league table. 

Only Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez have cost more money in football history.

A huge ceremony at the Bernabeu say Rodriguez presented to 40,000 fans and early estimates suggested shirt sales would break the record set by new team-mate Ronaldo. 

But adidas say the consultancy firm's figures are based on the 900 shirts flogged in the official Madrid club shop on the day of his presentation and do not know if 'sales extrapolated globally' although the sponsors' have not released official stats.

United beat the European champions 3-1 in Ann Arbor

A crowd of over 109,000, the biggest ever to watch the sport in the USA, flocked to see Manchester United face Real Madrid at Michigan Stadium on the first weekend of August. 

United beat the European champions 3-1 in Ann Arbor to progress to the International Champions Cup final against Liverpool, who they also beat 3-1.

Once more United put on an impressive display to overcome their biggest rivals in a wet Miami with goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard. 

It meant United got to lift a trophy and pose for the obligatory happy-team photograph. 

Five straight wins against stellar opposition in which United have scored a total of 16 goals and conceded only four constitutes a very successful pre-season.

Eleven days before the start of the Premier League, this has created an artificial and inflated sense of optimism around Old Trafford at the start of Louis van Gaal’s reign.

But the fact remains United have won no points, nor have they moved up the table or progressed in a cup competition.

They have gained a little momentum, but nothing more.

These results have been gained against half-fit and disinterested sides.

Lampard links up with Man City

Premier League: Frank Lampard meets new Manchester City team-mates after joining on loan

Frank Lampard met up with his new Manchester City team-mates for the first time this morning when he reported for training at Carrington.

The 36-year-old midfielder, who was released by Chelsea at the end of last season, joined City on loan from New York City until January. 

It is a short-term move for Lampard who signed in July for New York City, the MLS club owned by City and baseball giants New York Yankees.

The Premier League champions, who purchased the rights to the New York City franchise in May of last year, captured the midfielder on loan less than two weeks after he had signed a two-year deal with the American team.
